During class on Friday we learned about microphones and the different types of microphones you could buy for your ensembles. As a music educator it is important to learn about all the different mics there are so that when you are either recording your band or trying to set up mics so your band can be heard, then you want to know what the right types of mics to use.
One type of microphone I learn is the Dynamic Microphone. With the Dynamic Microphone I learned that you use this microphone to enhance the sound of the ensemble or soloist. Usually there is the SM 58 microphone and SM 48, for vocalists and the SM 57 for instruments. Another type of microphone I learned about is the Condenser Mics/ Recording Mics. These mics are really good for studio recording and recital performances. One example of a condenser mic is the Shure SM 81.
Another topic we learned about is how to avoid feedback with the mics and speakers. One tip is that don't point the mic directly at the speaker. The next tip to avoid feedback is to keep the volume of the speakers at a reasonable volume level. And lastly don't put your hand directly on top of the microphone because that causes feedback. Overall I learned a lot in class Friday and I am interested to learn more about the recording technology.
SM57 is the "instrument mic" that I discussed in class. Not the SM54.
